I ran into an issue with finding a nice brightness controller for kde, since the built in doesn't work. The program I found is called vdu It works very nicely and supposedly supports a light meter. Since mine wasn't attached, I didnt' bother. At least it works and stays in my tray. It also supports profiles etc. Nice thing is it actually works (if a bit slow since its python).
